“Judicial Independence” Topic of April 3 Chief Justice Weintraub Lecture

February 25, 2014 – 

The Honorable Harold Baer, Jr., Judge of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, and the Honorable Gary S. Stein, retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, will deliver the 31st Annual Chief Justice Joseph Weintraub Lecture at 6 pm on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Rutgers School of Law–Newark. 

The title of their lecture, which is sponsored by the law school and its Alumni Association, is “Judicial Independence.” Pre-registration is required.

Judge Baer was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in 1994 and assumed senior status in 2004. Prior to his appointment to the District Court, Judge Baer served for 10 years on the New York Supreme Court for New York County. He then spent two years as executive judicial officer for the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Service. He also is a former assistant counsel to the New York State Commission on the Governmental Operations of the City of New York and New York State Commission of Investigation, executive director of the Civilian Complaint Review Board, and head of the Criminal Division at the Office of the U.S. Attorney, Southern District of New York. Judge Baer is author of the book Judges Under Fire: Human Rights, Independent Judiciary, and the Rule of Law (2011).

Justice Stein is special counsel at Pashman Stein, which he joined after serving for more than 17 years (1985 – 2002) on the New Jersey Supreme Court. He wrote more than 365 published opinions during his tenure, the sixth longest in the State Supreme Court’s history. Prior to his appointment to the Court, he served as Director of the New Jersey Governor’s Office of Policy and Planning during the Kean administration. He also is a former counsel to the Teaneck Board of Adjustment, former chairperson of the Bergen County District Ethics Committee, and former chairperson of the Supreme Court Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution. Justice Stein is an adjunct professor at the law school, where he teaches Election Law and Health Care Law.
