Global Legal Studies
The law school has a long tradition of championing both academic excellence and markedly effective legal advocacy. Through its focus on the legal, social, and economic challenges posed by a global society, our Global Legal Studies (GLS) program honors that tradition on the international stage. GLS is committed to fostering human security by addressing all aspects of that concept — from the law applicable to non-conventional violence, to workers’ rights based on international principles, to the consequences of transnational and domestic commercial pressures.
GLS offers law students a rich array of academic courses, clinical programs, and experiential learning opportunities. Its combination of academics and advocacy provides students with a solid understanding of international law and of the close relationship between its private and public aspects.
The extensive experience of GLS faculty in both public and private international law enriches the classroom discourse and creates internship opportunities for students. The faculty have served at the United Nations, the U.S. State Department, non-governmental organizations, or have enjoyed careers as international litigators or specialists in international commercial transactions. The program collaborates with the student-run International Law Society and works closely with the Division of Global Affairs, a Rutgers–Newark degree-granting program.
