Constance Martin at Supreme Court

Constance L. Martin ’06, an associate in the Boston office of Fish & Richardson P.C., won the Hughes-Gossett Prize for Best Student Article from the Supreme Court Historical Society for an essay she wrote while a Rutgers student. The article, “The Life and Career of Justice Robert H. Jackson,” was published in the March 2008 issue of the Journal of Supreme Court History. Martin, shown at the June 2008 awards dinner with Chief Justice John Roberts and Judge Joseph A. Greenaway, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, wrote the essay for Judge Greenaway’s The Supreme Court: Genesis and Progression seminar.

The Hon. Salem Ahto ’63 has retired as presiding judge of the criminal division, Morris County Superior Court. He will continue to serve for two years as a recall judge.

Marilyn Askin ’70, chief legislative advocate for New Jersey AARP, received the Andrus Award for Community Service, the organization’s most prestigious award. Askin, who has taught seminars in Elder Law and Social Welfare Legislation at the law school for the past 24 years, served as president of AARP New Jersey from 2000-2005. During her tenure, she helped pass the strongest anti-telemarketing law in the country, and successfully advocated for long-term care initiatives and the Identity Theft Prevention Act.

Kirsten Branigan ’95 has joined the McDonald Law Group, LLC, Florham Park, as a member of the firm and chair of the employment law group.

Rosemary Bruno ’76, shareholder of Buchanan Ingersoll Rooney PC, has been elected statewide chair of the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Character.

John E. Clark ’96 has joined Epstein Becker & Green, P.C. as a member of the firm. He will lead the construction law practice in New Jersey, New York, and the northeast.

The Hon. Peter E. Doyne ’76, the general equity presiding judge in Bergen County and acting assignment judge in the Bergen Vicinage since 2006, was appointed to succeed the Hon. Sybil Moses ’74 as assignment judge. Judge Doyne was appointed to the bench in 1993 after working in private practice.

Dennis Drasco ’73 has become president of the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey. Drasco, who is a partner in Lum Drasco & Positan, also serves as chair of the ABA Commission on the American Jury.

Junie Hahn ’71, Donald R. Readlinger ’98, and Everett Johnson ’01 are included in New Jersey Law Journal’s “40 Under 40” list of promising young lawyers. Hahn is a partner with Wolff & Samson, Readlinger a partner with Pepper Hamilton, and Johnson an associate with Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer.

Volunteer Lawyers for Justice presented David L. Harris ’79, member of Lowenstein Sandler, with the Douglas S. Eakeley Award for outstanding pro bono service.

Anthony R. Higgins ’93 was sworn in as a Newark Municipal Court Judge.

Chadbourne & Parke has named Dennis Hopkins ’98 a partner in the firm. Resident in the New York office, he focuses his practice on all aspects of intellectual property.

The New Jersey State Bar Association presented Angela Foster ’98 with its Legislative Recognition Award.

James Hupp ’95 has been appointed founding dean of the new dental school at East Carolina University. He had been dean of the dental school at the University of Mississippi.

The New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law presented Raymond Londa ’64, a partner in Londa & Londa, with the 2008 Daniel J. O’Hern Award. The award is given annually to an attorney who exemplifies commitment to the highest standards of professional conduct, career achievement, and service to the legal profession and community.

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. has appointed Eva L. Martinez ’96 director of labor relations. She had been a senior staff attorney in Con Edison’s law department.

Robert Morris ’95 has joined the New York office of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP as a partner in its intellectual property department. He was previously with Ropes & Gray and before that Fish & Neave.

Linda Neilan ’01 has been named a partner at Outten & Golden LLP, New York. She is co-chair of the firm’s family responsibilities and disability discrimination practice group.

Yvonne Nix ’02, staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society in New York, presented Fair Trial Initiative’s K. Kirk Osborn Award to North Carolina attorney Terry Alford. As a 2002-2004 FTI Fellow, Nix worked with Alford on a capital defense case in which the jury rejected the death penalty.

The lead article in the Sept. 8 New Jersey Law Journal profiled a case in which Jacques Pierre ’06 successfully convinced the Essex County Superior Court that, in violation of court rules, the eviction process for renters was wrongly applied against a co-op shareholder and that the eviction should be vacated. Pierre handled the case during his six months as Lowenstein Sandler's associate-in-residence at Essex Newark Legal Services. Pierre is now serving a one-year clerkship with Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.

Annette Quijano ’91 was appointed to fill a vacant State Assembly seat in Union county (20th Legislative District). She had been an assistant counsel to Gov. Jon Corzine. Quijano is the district’s first woman and first Hispanic state legislator.

Lewis RobinsonLewis J. Robinson ’73 has been appointed chair of the board of directors of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the community foundation for the 29-town Greater Hartford (CT) region. Robinson, whose background is in business, law, and public affairs, worked for Travelers Insurance Companies for 26 years, serving as general counsel for the Personal Lines Division prior to his retirement.

Rutgers School of Law–Newark Senior Assistant Dean Andrew Rothman ’90 has been appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Civil Practice Committee for the 2008-2010 term.

Michael Rowe ’98 has joined Blank Rome LLP as partner in the commercial litigation group. He was previously with Saul Ewing LLP.

Edward G. Sponzilli ’75 received the 2008 Trial Attorneys of New Jersey Professional Lawyer of the Year Award from the New Jersey Commissioner on Professionalism in the Law. Sponzilli, who is a member of Norris McLaughlin & Marcus, has been elected a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation in the New Jersey Section.

Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs LLP, Boca Raton, FL, has named Scott Topolski ’87 chair of its litigation practice group.

Toan Tran ’06 has joined Blank Rome LLP as an associate in the IP and technology department, based in the firm’s Washington, DC office. He had been with Gibbons P.C.

Professor Elizabeth Warren ’76 of Harvard Law School is chair of the Congressional Panel overseeing the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

The Hon. Alexander P. Waugh, Jr. ’75, presiding judge for general equity in Middlesex County, has been appointed to the Appellate Division.

Precious Williams ’06 was the keynote speaker at the Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club 19th Annual “Say Amen” Banquet. Williams is an alumna of the St. Louis organization’s “The Sky Is the Limit” career-readiness program. After serving as a law clerk for the Hon. Joseph P. Perfilio, she has joined Heidell, Pittoni, Murphy & Bach, New York, as an associate.

Workers’ Compensation Judge Sue Pai Yang ’84 received a Diversity Award from the Somerset County Diversity Coalition.
