Q: Where are Rutgers graduates employed?

A: Typically 98% of graduates seeking employment are employed within six months of graduation. Rutgers alumni are associated with leading law firms in New Jersey, New York City, Philadelphia, and other metropolitan centers throughout the country. In addition, approximately 30% of recent graduating classes have received appointments as judicial law clerks. Some graduates start their career in various government agencies and a number are employed in not-for-profit organizations that serve the indigent.  (Select here for Class of 2004 employment statistics .) 

Q: What is the average starting salary for Rutgers-Newark graduates?

A:  Starting salaries vary considerably depending on the type of practice and the geographical location.  For the Class of 2002, the median starting salary was $100,000 for graduates entering the private sector and $38,000 for those enterving government and public interest work.  Below is the range of starting salaries reported within the four major job categories:


PRIVATE PRACTICE: $29,000 -$140,000
GOVERNMENT: $35,000 - $75,000
CORPORATIONS: $30,000 - $128,000
PUBLIC INTEREST: $30,000 - $41,200

Q. What firms interview on campus?

A. Each fall, legal employers from across the country come to the law school to recruit second and third-year Rutgers students for both summer and post-graduate positions. In addition, throughout the year, employers from law firms, government agencies, public interest organizations, the judiciary, and corporations list more than 1,500 part and full-time positions with the office.
