July 20, 2010 –
Sills Cummis & Gross is pleased to announce that Philip S. Voss, a first-year student at Rutgers School of Law–Newark, has been selected as the firm’s 2010 Charles J. Walsh Scholar. The Charles J. Walsh Scholar Fund will provide financial and other assistance in the form of scholarship support, summer internship stipends, active mentorship during law school, and career guidance.

2010 Charles Walsh Scholar
Philip Voss, 2010 Charles J. Walsh Scholar, is congratulated by Thomas J. Demski ’69, member of Sills Cummis & Gross. Looking on are James M. Hirschhorn and Margaret F. Black ’76, both members of the firm.

Voss was chosen for his academic promise, leadership qualities, and dedication to improving his community. He stated: “I am extremely honored to be chosen as this year’s Charles J. Walsh Scholar. As a litigator, I am told that Judge Walsh embodied many of the same traits that prompted me to follow a career in law, including ingenuity, tenacity, and compassion. I was drawn to law because I was attracted to the intellectual problem solving, teamwork, and client interaction which go hand in hand with complex legal issues. I am appreciative that the Charles J. Walsh Scholarship has allowed me to experience hands on those very topics that inspired me to pursue law in the first place.” Voss received a B.A. in international relations with a minor in political science from Colgate University. He also participated in the Colgate University Washington, D.C. Study Program.

Max Crane, Managing Partner, stated: “We are pleased to welcome Philip Voss, our 2010 Charles J. Walsh Scholar. We are proud to support Rutgers School of Law by assisting and mentoring students such as Mr. Voss. We are hopeful that he will use this experience to become an excellent lawyer and thus continue Chuck’s legacy.”

In 2006, Sills Cummis & Gross established the Scholar Fund on behalf of the family, friends and colleagues of the late Judge Charles J. Walsh who, prior to his appointment to the Superior Court of New Jersey, Bergen County, was a valued Member of the Firm for 17 years. Judge Walsh was also an adjunct professor at the law school.
