Commencement 2016 Information and FAQs

Congratulations to all students who are graduating on May 27th!

The Law School Graduate Recognition Ceremony will start at 10 am at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). Students will be recognized individually on stage and receive their diplomas.

We are pleased to welcome Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU, as our convocation ceremony speaker.

What is the timeline of the day for graduates?

8:30 a.m.  Graduates report to the Law School for check-in (lower level atrium) 
9:40 a.m. Graduates line-up along the stairwell for the parade to NJPAC
10:00 a.m. The Law School Graduate Recognition ceremony begins
12:00 p.m.

Conclusion of the ceremony. At this time you will have the opportunity to meet up with family, friends and fellow graduates.

12:15 to 1 p.m.    Reception at the Law School — graduates and guests are invited back to the Law School for light refreshments to toast your new status as alumni(ae). The Law School will be open all afternoon for those of you who wish to show your guests around after the ceremonies.

Do I have to attend a graduation rehearsal?
No. There is no graduation rehearsal.

What instructions should I give guests?
Please inform guests that tickets are assigned sections but not individual seats therefore, seats are first come, first serve. Guests can enter NJPAC as early as 9:30 am.

How many guest tickets can I have?
Each student is allotted 5 guest tickets; more may be made available upon request. Guest tickets are $5 each and must be paid for in cash. You will be notified via email when tickets are available.

Do children need a ticket to attend the ceremonies at Prudential Center and NJPAC?
Yes, EVERYONE needs a ticket to enter, even infants.

Do graduates need a ticket for NJPAC?
Yes. Graduates will receive their ticket when they check-in for graduation on the 27th. Graduates will not be charged for their own ticket.

What parking options will be available?
NJPAC lot A be available for $17 per car. Parking in the Military Park Garage is $12 per car. Please refer to the NJPAC parking map. University parking lots will also be open (Deck 1, Deck 2, and Lot 510).

What happens if it rains?
Rain or shine, all graduates, faculty, etc., will parade from the Law School to NJPAC as planned. If it’s raining the morning of graduation, we suggest you bring a small folding umbrella. In the event of severe inclement weather, check the campus operating status at the bottom of the Rutgers–Newark homepage or call 973-353-1766 for further instructions.

Where do I return my locker key?
To Jennifer Pingarote in Room 170 or to Dean Rothman. You must return your locker key BEFORE getting guest tickets.

If I lost my locker key, what should I do?
You will need to pay $25.00 (cash or check made out to Rutgers School of Law) to Jennifer Pingarote in Room 170 or to Dean Rothman.

Where do I pick-up my cap and gown?
Cap and gowns are now available for pick-up at the campus bookstore at 110 Warren Street.

When is the last day to pick up my cap and gown?
Caps and gowns are available for pick up the week of April 18. No one will be available the morning of graduation to give you your gown.

Do I get to keep my cap and gown?

How can I order a large diploma?
Each student will receive two diplomas (one large, one small) on stage, unless there are outstanding financial (or other) obligations to the University.

When do I find out if I am receiving an honor or prize?
Information about who will be receiving the various prizes, honors, and awards is not announced until the ceremony at NJPAC.

Will there be a professional photographer at the Law School graduation?
Yes. Island Photography will take a photo of each graduate receiving his/her diploma and will contact you directly several weeks after the ceremony about your purchase options.

When will I receive my yearbook?
Yearbooks will be mailed to your home address after graduation. They are usually mailed in January. Please make sure that Dean Rothman’s office has an up-to-date address as we will not mail to the Talbott Apartments or University Square housing. If you are not sure where you will be living, it is a good idea to use an address you can be certain of, such as a parent’s.
