Kinship Caregivers to Learn Legal Rights of Children in Their Care – and Get a Holiday Gift for Them – at December 3 Conference

December 02, 2010 –
The Child Advocacy Clinic at Rutgers School of Law–Newark, AARP of New Jersey, and Grandma K.A.R.E.S., Inc. are co-sponsoring a special conference on Friday, December 3, 2010 for grandparents and other relatives who are raising children. The goal is to inform the caregivers about their rights in court, what legal status best fits their situation, and their entitlement to certain governmental and community resources. Workshop topics will include caregivers’ legal rights and those of their children, access to financial assistance, special education resources, gang prevention programs, and mental health services. At lunchtime, at least a dozen vendors will be available to provide additional information to the caregivers.

Kids ‘n’ the Law, a Rutgers Law School student group, has collected new toys and gently used and new books for the caregivers to take home as gifts for the children for the holidays.

Conference planners are Clinical Professor Randi Mandelbaum, Director of the Child Advocacy Clinic, and students in the Child Advocacy and Special Education Clinics at Rutgers School of Law–Newark; Marilyn Askin, Adjunct Professor at Rutgers School of Law–Newark and Chief Legislative Advocate for AARP-NJ; Hendricks Davis, AARP-NJ consultant; and Louise Eagle, Founder and President of Grandma K.A.R.E.S. (Kinship Advocacy, Resources, Education & Support).

Breakfast and lunch will be provided due to a generous grant from the Nicolson Foundation.
