Many of our students have substantial prior work experience, have already earned graduate degrees, and in several cases are fluent in foreign languages. In addition, approximately 30 percent of our students participate in a program designed to increase diversity at the law school and in the legal profession. Rutgers School of Law–Newark offers both full-time day and part-time evening programs. Joint degree options are available with Rutgers Business School (J.D./M.B.A.), Bloustein School of Planning & Public Policy (J.D./M.C.R.P.), the School of Social Work (J.D./M.S.W.), and the School of Criminal Justice (J.D./M.A.). There is also a joint J.D./M.D. program with the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. The Foreign Lawyer Program permits persons with foreign law degrees to earn a juris doctor degree in two years.
Grades and Class Ranking
Rutgers School of Law–Newark does not provide class ranking of students. Class ranking was eliminated by the law school’s faculty in order to avoid the pitfalls and prejudices that may result from a system suggesting a substantial difference between students who, in fact, have small numerical differences in grade point averages. In the faculty’s view, the ranking system did not accurately reflect the relative abilities or potential of the law school’s students and graduates.
The grading system at Rutgers School of Law–Newark is as follows:
At graduation, the student with the highest GPA is awarded highest honors and students in the top 10 percent of the class are awarded honors. At the discretion of the Scholastic Standing Committee, some students with very high GPAs may be awarded high honors (there is no fixed percentage) and all students in the top 10 percent become members of the Order of the Coif.
Required first year courses are graded on a 3.0 curve.
